Although an unashamedly modern city, Amman does have a history dating back thousands of years, and a tour of the city takes you through this past. Originally situated on seven hills at the heart of the present-day city, Amman was known as Philadelphia during the Greek and Roman periods, when it was a member of the Decaoplis federation. The remains of the Temple of Hercules that dominate the capitol hill date to this period, as does the incredibly intact Roman theatre, still used for festivals and performances, and the nymphaem in downtown Amman. Also atop the capitol are Ummayed remains of mosques and palaces, and the Archaeological Museum, to be replaced in 2011 by the new National Museum, which is expected to be very impressive.
